On
the Road Again If you have ever lived, traveled, driven, built or ridden in a converted school bus, this book is a must-see for you. Roger Beck has compiled a magnificent assortment of pictures of homes on wheels. But these are not just any old run-of-the-mill RVs that we see everyday. These are beautiful but functional works of art. Beck assembled this labor of love on his computer and self-published the book. He photographed many of the rigs, while others were contributed by proud bus owners over the years. Each bus is as individualistic as the owners themselves. And the photo settings are as diverse as the buses, shot in the redwoods, at the ocean, in deserts and amid the lush greenery of the mountains. These rigs' interiors are a tribute to the builders' ingenuity. Different woodwork, tiles and fabrics form lovely patterns. Beck gives the plans and step-by-step building procedures of his last bus. Not a project for beginners, this example illustrates the skills necessary to build a functional, road-worthy bus home. Obviously, technical skills are necessary, but so is a lot of luck. Although some of these beautiful vehicles are still in operation, others must be in a junkyard by now. Or better yet, parked in the back field, serving as a guest house or a great second room for teenagers. Browse through Beck's book, and take a walk down memory lane. Chances are, you will recognize some of the rigs or the folks who drive them and live in them. Who knows? You may just want to get on the road again yourself. — Geneva Miller |
